Bergerac and Its Traditional Gabarre Boats



Just minutes from your glamping stay, the quays of Bergerac recall the era of gabarres, traditional flat-bottomed boats once used to carry wine to Bordeaux. Today, a gabarre boat trip offers a unique way to explore the Dordogne, past cliffs and vineyards, with the boatman sharing stories of the river's history.


From the water, the view of Bergerac's old town and timber-framed houses is stunning — a lovely way to extend the terroir experience started at Home Sweet Lodge.

45 minutes from our campsite, Sarlat-la-Canéda charms with cobbled streets and golden stone mansions. Nearby: La Roque-Gageac, the Marqueyssac gardens, and the famous Lascaux caves.


A lovely day trip, before returning to the peace of the Périgord Pourpre.

Just minutes from your glamping stay, the vineyards of Bergerac stretch across the hills of the Périgord Pourpre , producing full-bodied reds and remarkable dry whites. Nearby, Monbazillac and its famous sweet wine await, overlooked by a Renaissance château with one of the finest views in the region.


Many estates offer tastings just a few kilometres from your lodge — a great way to extend the terroir experience started at our campsite bar.

The Périgord Pourpre is home to medieval bastides, 13th-century fortified villages with distinctive arcaded squares, market halls, and grid-pattern streets. Eymet charms with its lively square, Issigeac with its winding lanes and Sunday market.
Bergerac itself has a remarkable old town, with timber-framed houses and historic quays.

Outdoor Activities in the Dordogne

The Dordogne River is perfect for canoeing, past cliffs, châteaux, and villages. Hikers and cyclists will enjoy the trails and the Vélo Voie Vallée de la Dordogne.
For families, water sports and tree-top courses are within 30 minutes — before returning to your lodge's calm and our heated pool.

Périgord Gastronomy

The Périgord is famous for foie gras, duck confit, and black truffles, found at the markets of Bergerac, Issigeac, and Sarlat. A chance to meet local producers and bring home walnuts, magret, and prunes.
At Home Sweet Lodge, our gourmet jars and evening bar continue this discovery of local flavours.
